If you’re looking to buy an RV, the smartest thing you can do is ask, “What is the cheapest state to buy an RV?”

If you don’t care where you buy your RV, it makes sense that you would want to find the cheapest state to buy it.

Florida, Texas, and Arizona are the cheapest states to buy an RV. We bought one RV in Ohio because we got a good deal and one RV we bought in Florida.

Continue reading, and we’ll go into why I said Florida, Texas, and Arizona for the cheapest states to buy an RV.

Buying an RV in Texas, Arizona, or Florida

Texas, Arizona, and Florida are RVer hotspots and are usually the answer to “What is the cheapest state to buy an RV?”. Since this is the case, you can pretty much throw a stick, and you’ll hit an RV sale lot. I don’t recommend doing that because it can be rather expensive to repair an RV with a stick through the windshield.

My point is that since there are so many RVs available, many RV lots put their sale prices pretty low in these states. They want people to make a decision to buy their new RV while they’re in the state visiting. There are plenty of RV lots that are happy to take trade-ins so they can secure the sale.

Even if you’re out of state, it might make sense for you to buy an RV in whichever of these states is closest to you.

Things to Keep in Mind

Make sure you understand the law in the state where you have domicile when it comes to purchasing RVs out of state. For instance, when we purchased our RV in Ohio, they didn’t bundle our taxes into the RV loan. They had us pay the taxes to the state separately. Honestly, I think that may just have been because of the sales lot/salesperson that we bought it from, not understanding what to do, though.

Be careful of things like that so you don’t get a surprise when you go to register your vehicle. Needless to say, I wasn’t super happy with that RV lot and was glad to give them a frowny face for failing to disclose this and trying to make it seem like the RV was cheaper there than in other locations.

Montana Loophole

Montana doesn’t have any sales tax. None. Zip. If you plan on purchasing an expensive RV, it could make sense that you would save as much money as possible by registering your RV in that state.

You might wonder how you can do that if your domicile is elsewhere. Montana is the only state that will allow you to register your RV there without having your domicile there.

You do, however, have to have an LLC there. You can get someone that knows what they’re doing to register your LLC there, and then you can purchase your RV and register it in Montana. Depending on the tax you would have otherwise had to pay in your domicile state, you could save thousands of dollars just by spending a couple of hundred dollars to have someone help you set up an LLC in Montana.

Making money is great, but keeping money is even better, and this is an interesting way to make it happen, which I didn’t know about when I bought either of my RVs.
