Most showers take about four to six gallons of water each time. This depends on how long the shower is, how intense the water flow is in the shower, what type of shower head you have, and if you keep your shower going throughout your whole shower.

Taking a Shower without Filling Up the Grey Tank

If you are boondocking or somewhere else where you can’t empty your tanks, then you want to be careful that you don’t use up all your water or fill up your grey tank. We had to pay close attention and figure out how much water we would use and could use before we took showers or washed dishes.

Our first RV had a very small grey tank, so we had to be extra careful. When I would shower, I would plan my shower and have everything where I could reach it.

Besides that, the RV shower had a little switch that would allow the water to still be “on,” but it wasn’t running. I could easily stop the flow of the water without having to mess up the temperature of my shower water.

If you try showering like I did, you can get your shower down closer to four instead of six. My husband was in the military, so he didn’t even need that long to come out so fresh and so clean.

Now you know the answer to this question. If you have full hookups, you don’t need to worry about this as much because you can empty your tank. However, if you don’t have full hookups, your tank can fill up pretty quickly, and you won’t like seeing the grey water backed up in your tub or shower.
