It’s late at night, and you’re ready to get some sleep, but you might be asking, “Can you sleep in an RV anywhere?”
You might not want to sleep for a long time, so staying at an RV park wouldn’t make much sense. But where can you stay when you need some sleep but don’t want to stay for long and don’t want to pay?
Residential Streets
So, I was a little shocked to find out that unless a residential street says no parking, you should be okay to park there. I wouldn’t recommend that you stay there for more than one night since people will start to get a little wary of the RV hanging out in their neighborhood.
If you do decide to stay on a residential street, make sure to be quiet and try not to stand out. If you can use curtains that won’t show the light in your vehicle, that’s even better.
Gas Stations or Truck Stops
Some gas stations and truck stops are fine with you getting some sleep before you hit the road again. If you ask and make sure to make a purchase from their store or get some fuel, many of them are more than happy to have you get some shut-eye.
Sites/Apps that Show You Where to Camp for Free
Use the above sites to see where there are some other types of free camping sites nearby so you can find the perfect place to camp. We didn’t do a lot of free camping when we were on the road, but we have quite a few friends that loved boondocking and staying in unique locations.
Another simple and great way to get some information about good places to camp in your location is other RVers you meet. You may be able to find some good information on forums as well, but you’ll usually get the juiciest tips from people that are right in front of you chatting it up.

As long as you feel comfortable and safe where you’re parking and you aren’t going to get a ticket, enjoy some sleep. I’m a little bit of a nervous nelly, so I found it hard to sleep at rest areas and other places like that. But many people think these are great places to park and get some rest, so it’s really up to you.
